About

Brutal Murder of Loving Couple

Vinnies volunteer Margaret Keyte and her husband Ken have been bashed to death at their new NSW South Coast home.

The elderly couple sat on their front porch on Sunday, enjoying their ocean view as they often did.

Within hours they were dead, the victims of a vicious bashing which left the 86 year old man and his 71 year old wife with massive head injuries.

Mr Keyte lay near his wife in the living room of the house they had moved into a little over a month ago in Batehaven on the New South Wales South Coast.

The couple's son Garry Keyte who lives two blocks away, called police after he had gone to visit his parents and noticed their cars parked outside but was worried when he could not get any answer at the house.

Post mortems are expected to determine whether a weapon was used.

Superintendent Gary Megay said it was clear there had been a struggle.

"There was obvious signs of violence. The motive for the deaths is not known," he said.

Another of the couple's sons, Donald, said: "It just shows the way the world is".

Ken and Margaret Keyte were described as long term residents and "pillars" of Batehaven's close knit retirement community.

Mr Keyte, a former truck driver, adored trucks and fixing cars, and had volunteered at a local service station until he became too frail to do so.

"They were the most respected people in town, I can't see anyone who would want to kill them," station owner Gary Bailey said.

Mrs Keyte was a volunteer who worked for St Vincent de Paul Society and other local charities, and was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, attending it almost every day to offer help.

Memories

Ken and Margaret

Pollie Miller Dec 04, 2009

Im pollie and ken and margaret were my great aunty and uncle and they should not have been taken away from us. Im only 15 and i think that it is the sadest and worst thing in the whole wide world. To this day i am still trying to figure out why someone would want to take this lovely couple from us. They were humble and wouldn't hurt even a fly. It makes me sad but all i thikn about is that they are now with all the lovely people that have also been taken but none a badly as how they were taken. I can see them now happy and smiling with my poppy. I can see uncle ken and my poppy playin cards and i can see aunty margaret sitting watching them with a big smile on her face. I think that it is so so so sad. but those are just my thoughts i hope you are touched by them.
R.I.P Uncle Ken and Aunty Margaret. xx

Loved Grandparents

Adam Keyte Aug 08, 2009

Kenneth (Ken) and Margaret Keyte were two of the most caring people in the world! They adored their grandchildren who i know miss them very much. Ken and Marg would not do anything to harm a soul and would give their last money or item of clothing away for the good of man kind. They accepted anyone and everyone how they were. They both were loved and will always be remembered throughout Aus by the people they came in contact with. how do i know this? I'm their Grandson Adam. As the first anniversery of their murders are tomorrow they would want to tell everyone to remember them by the good and not how they were taken from us....
R.I.P. Grandma and Pop, always loved and in our hearts forever, never to be forgotten.

How My Views Have Changed

Ethan Jul 12, 2009

I have never meet these two people, which i hear are truely great souls. As i searched my own last name, i see the storys of these two people, and how there lives were taken away. As i may be a stranger to this couple i now carry the knowledge of how the world sometimes can not be at all fair. So may i say, i am truely sorry to the family who has to live with the pain of this crime.

May there souls rest in peace.

Ethan Keyte, Gorokan

Two Beautiful Souls.

Lynn Aug 25, 2008

Margaret and Ken were two very beautiful souls who will be missed greatly by all who knew them. They touched many peoples lives with their kindness and generosity of spirit.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends at this difficult time.
